Ayurveda in summer

Summer is associated with the season of Pitta. So the fire element increases considerably.

Depending on your Ayurvedic constitution (your dosha), summer can bring its share of aggravated symptoms for some, or regain a balance for others.

For example, for a person with a dominant Pitta dosha, they may feel irritability in the summer heat, already having a hot temperament, fire and intensity characteristics. She may have nausea, rash and inflammation, impatience, heartburn.

What we want for the summer, to calm the excess of Pitta, to self-regulate the inner fire during this beautiful season, is freshness, softness, calm, hydration, and refreshing nutrition.


The digestive fire is low during the summer, so here are a few tips to sweeten the deal:

  • Eat foods with astringent, sweet and bitter flavors (fresh and cold, fruits and vegetables in season, nature is good)
  • Limit salty, pungent and acidic flavors
  • Choose cooked vegetables over raw ones to facilitate digestion
  • Spices and refreshing herbs such as fennel, basil, mint, coriander, dill…
  • Squeezed lemon juice in warm water in the morning will help the digestive system
  • Warm infusions such as fresh ginger, fresh mint, chamomile, turmeric
  • Natural sweetness through vegetables and fruits in season such as green vegetables, salads, apples, strawberries
  • Avoid alcohol. fried foods, foods that are too spicy, cheeses, eating large amounts of meat or red meat (poultry is preferred in the summer), or eating late at night. All things that are difficult to digest for our slower system in summer
  • Drink a lot of water
  • Refreshing oils: Coconut and sunflower oil to be preferred
  • Intense physical activities to be avoided between 10am and 2pm
  • Yin yoga is recommended, rather than bikram yoga
  • We take the time to breathe
  • We wear colors like white, green, blue, rather than black or red
  • We love ice cream in summer, but it is more difficult for the stomach and intestines, so we go in moderation
  • We protect our skin with a good sun cream
